GRAVEYARD PT. II

GRAVEYARD

The world is black. And then you blink at your plate.

A portion of your favorite dish greets your eyes, albeit in a form you may never have seen it in before. Encased in a thick, wobbling layer of multi-colored gelatin, the food you know and love now sits suspended in its protein-based enclosure as an eccentric re-imagining of the dish. Furthermore, it only takes a glance to see that the rest of the dining table's spread shares this same theme, as every single dish, sweet or savory, finds itself victim to a jiggling Jell-o jail.

Still, you won't have much time to take this all in before a quiet, high-pitched giggling makes its way to your ears, only crescendoing in volume the longer you sit in this oh-so-familiar dining room. It doesn't take much to find the source of the sound either; unlike the other side, this place is absolutely teeming with fairies to the point where the fluttering of their iridescent wings is clearly audible behind the din of their laughter. As you come to your senses, dozens and dozens of beady eyes watch with their tiny faces stretched out in a wide grin, before speaking in unison.

"Welcome, we can't wait to serve you!"

As the fairies erupt in raucous laughter all around you, at least one more thing is readily apparent: however you met your end, your body is completely whole again. You also have company at the table with you, although whether it's desirable company or not may depend on the circumstances surrounding your death.

In any case, there's nothing stopping anyone from leaving the dining room and roaming freely as usual, and most of the same areas that were available to you on the other side are still present here, albeit with some differences. And though your life may have been stolen from you, it still looks like you have a part in this tale, somehow, someway.

So, will you let your story finish here, or will you write your own ending?

[Welcome to the Graveyard! This is part 2 of the GY post for Weeks 6 and 7. The previous post for Weeks 2-5 is linked above. Please also view the GY doc linked above for a full rundown of the basics. You may also still submit for items and gacha rolls using the GY shop post.]

Well, I believe we may need to compare notes when it comes Ferry as well as the mistress of the mirrors, particularly after what happened earlier in the week.

What do you know about Ferry, so far?

[Feel free to ask him things too, he’s just out here to gather info himself as well because rolling into graveyard in endgame is a lot!!]

Their story they gave us that they're also from another world and they want to also escape this place.

I wonder if that is a lie or perhaps only a fragment of the truth. Since she is unlike the other fairies, she has a mind of her own — that is why she was able to disobey Hamelin.

Her original role should have been to obey him, as the others do unconditionally.

It seems she has found a way to use this to her advantage…

[Thoughtfully… why does he sound kind of impressed.]

They seem to be defying the void thing too, even in little ways. Makes you wonder what they're really after.

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
She has certainly departed from her role in several ways.

So far as I know, she is meant to watch the shop, oversee the dead, and lead them around in circles rather than giving them anything actually productive.

[…]

My guess is that she used knowledge of the so-called traitors to gain trust, stringing you all along with lies about the scale of the game and our importance. In doing so, she could count on you to cooperate with her for that period of time.

Then, her own plans must rest upon using the dead — either to stock the crystals that she calls seals and that B calls sustenance, or something beyond that as well.

[personal profile] lastreward 2021-07-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well we certainly do a lot of that too. Then there's so many of us, some of us do... other things.

[ That may or may not be sketchy sounding but gives them some insight into their environment. ]

Ha-ha, I wondered whether we simply inflated your numbers too much. An army of spirits is still an army, after all.

[An army of spirits with pens…… haunted pen pals are a pain…]

Other things?

[ Ignores the former thing because. Yeah, thanks. ]

They're doing their own investigations. C-ta is the one who always does them, so you can grill him for details about all the stuff he's been doing. They found the map and stuff too.

That they’ve been forced to help Hamelin for multiple iterations of this game.
heroicact: (how candid is your camera?)

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
And there we have an outright lie. This is the first iteration of this game, and Hamelin’s first time as overseer. I believe she also used this lie to overinflate the importance of the caporegimes’ role, so…
mearry: (pic#6796112)

[personal profile] mearry 2021-07-15 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
And what did your ā€œroleā€ consist of? From your point of view?
heroicact: (hearth & heart)

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ah.

The role of the caporegimes was quite simple and consisted of only two requirements:

We were to select the effects that would rule the living each week. The increase in desires, the decrease in mobility, the visions in reflections, and so on. Those were our doing together with Hamelin’s music.

Otherwise, we were to ensure there would be at least one murder each week until the end of the game. So long as someone else killed, we would not move. Thus, the only reason we moved in the last week was to fulfill our duty in the game.

Any other impressions you may have of our role is likely a fabrication.
mearry: (pic#6796125)

[personal profile] mearry 2021-07-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's...definitely less important than we thought. Still annoying.

[ hm. he feels played. ]

What would happen if no one murdered? Like, what if no one dropped dead at the end of the week?

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
My apologies for the inconvenience.

[This is entirely insincere but well.]

I believe the way Hamelin put it was that the story must go on. Even without caporegimes, even without willing murderers — that was the impression I got. He did not seem especially willing to speak of it… but it seems rather ominous.

In that sense, getting rid of the caporegimes earlier may have helped your cause, but it likely would not have led to the end of this game.
mearry: (pic#6796002)

[personal profile] mearry 2021-07-15 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ he shrugs, smiling just as insincerely. ]

It sounds to me like Hamelin himself would have stepped up to murder if he needed to. So why is he so desperate? What story is he being tasked with fulfilling?
lastreward: (so i see)

[personal profile] lastreward 2021-07-15 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Technically, they said they the traitors are looking for their weaknesses, which isn't... that useful nor important either.

[ But well, it's probably more or less relying on their dislike of Hamelin, which hasn't change, quite frankly. ]
heroicact: ('twas brillig until the slithy toves gyr)

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean that she said we were looking… for her weaknesses? Strange, as we had nothing to do with her at all, and she should have had nothing to do with us.

[Hamelin is so unpopular……]
lastreward: (headtilt)

[personal profile] lastreward 2021-07-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
No the living's weaknesses. [ She pauses, trying to remember but not going to go look through the notes again. ] Though that might have come from Tenn... but probably fed to him by them.

I hate having to agree with you, but...I can't deny that Ferry isn't trustworthy.

When we broke off from the crystal investigation...we found a workshop, and there were several sketches of fairies. One matched the appearance of the fairies we've seen around, but this one was what stood out to me the most.

[Rika sets a crossed out half sketch of a fairy, and points out the writing in the corner.]

"She says she’ll know the customers best, so she’ll handle her appearance herself." I assume this refers to Ferry.

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
That must be B’s work…

That begs the question of whether Ferry is one of the fairies at all, or whether she merely took on that appearance to fit in. Also, I have my doubts that ā€œFerryā€ is her true name.

[As far as pseudonyms go it’s kind of so lazy it almost seems real……]
eternaljune: (55)

[personal profile] eternaljune 2021-07-15 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Given the implication that she has previous experience with this "B", it'd make sense if she was actually another human or something else. With the tone of that other note, she could be a previous victim of B. Maybe not through a setup like this, but I wouldn't be surprised if a creature claiming to grant wishes has many tricks up its sleeve.
heroicact: (this earring changes color man)

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-15 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm? Which other note are you speaking of?

[He turns this over thoughtfully, though, despite the lack of context.]

I'm not sure if we can conclude that Ferry is a human if she is a shapeshifter of some sort as you mentioned. Indeed, this may be the first game of its kind, but B must always eat -- that may be what the insect's note meant by "previous bottles of sustenance".

There are several questions that come to mind, given all of this: what was B's old mode of obtaining sustenance? Why did it change? If she is so powerful, why must she enlist Hamelin and Ferry as her helpers or underlings?
eternaljune: (11)

[personal profile] eternaljune 2021-07-15 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
The one the other group found in the maze. The way B refers to Ferry implies a sort of familiarity: when someone calls you "dear" when they know they hold power over you, there's usually history in my experience.

Though let me clarify: I'm proposing that Ferry was human at some point. If she's a shapeshifter, she clearly lost that humanity somehow. Lost it to B even, with what her powers are.

[She sighs.]

Not that Ferry's origins change much.

I'm thinking B functioned on a more individual level in the past--approached a certain young child with a wish and offering to grant it in exchange for their soul. Not unlike a traditional Western demon.

There could be a few reasons she changed her method: maybe she needs to consume more souls at once to maintain her power than she did in the past. Or it could be something petty like souls that were sacrificed by humans taste better, or that she simply got greedy. Having overseers probably makes the process of taking multiple people run smoother.

Did Hamelin ever mention how he became involved with B?

...there weren't any sewing needles in the workshop. She probably didn't need any.
