GRAVEYARD

The world is black. And then you blink at your plate.

A portion of your favorite dish greets your eyes, albeit in a form you may never have seen it in before. Encased in a thick, wobbling layer of multi-colored gelatin, the food you know and love now sits suspended in its protein-based enclosure as an eccentric re-imagining of the dish. Furthermore, it only takes a glance to see that the rest of the dining table's spread shares this same theme, as every single dish, sweet or savory, finds itself victim to a jiggling Jell-o jail.

Still, you won't have much time to take this all in before a quiet, high-pitched giggling makes its way to your ears, only crescendoing in volume the longer you sit in this oh-so-familiar dining room. It doesn't take much to find the source of the sound either; unlike the other side, this place is absolutely teeming with fairies to the point where the fluttering of their iridescent wings is clearly audible behind the din of their laughter. As you come to your senses, dozens and dozens of beady eyes watch with their tiny faces stretched out in a wide grin, before speaking in unison.

"Welcome, we can't wait to serve you!"

As the fairies erupt in raucous laughter all around you, at least one more thing is readily apparent: however you met your end, your body is completely whole again. You also have company at the table with you, although whether it's desirable company or not may depend on the circumstances surrounding your death.

In any case, there's nothing stopping anyone from leaving the dining room and roaming freely as usual, and most of the same areas that were available to you on the other side are still present here, albeit with some differences. And though your life may have been stolen from you, it still looks like you have a part in this tale, somehow, someway.

So, will you let your story finish here, or will you write your own ending?

The weirdest coincidences sure happen around here, huh? [ She stays where she is because her presence probably won't help? Well, if he asks for it is another matter. ]

Yes, I'm still not sure why they stopped--

[ As he says that last word, the horse starts...trying to canter away? Well, that's not good. Looks like he's being birdnapped. ]

-- Ah.

[ Okay well, good time as any to go get horsie to stop and she'll give it lot of pats and stuff. Is this horse like those other animals though? Will Nageki just phase through it.... ]

[ Well, he did what most panicked birds would do and flapped his way to the ground! But thanks to Sami he'll avoid accidentally getting whacked by it or something just as awkward. Not that he doesn't feel awkward as is. Wow, this is embarrassing. ]

...I don't understand animals.

[ she laughs again at that, holding onto the horse, who's prolly trying to take a bite out of her hair. ]

I suppose misunderstanding happens the most when you can't understand each other, huh?

...The joys of communication.

[ He'll slowly go closer to help because yes, let's not leave Sami to the fate of hair munching. ]

Though I'd rather have it than live without it.

I guess that's how the world of animals is so eat or be eaten.... well, humans operate similarly too, huh?

[ She pats the horse quietly. ]

[ Also patting the horse. ]

Seems like it. There are still societal clashes over that philosophy even now.

Animals are nicer in some ways anyway. They don't have to argue about dumb things in life.

... though I guess if they are, we don't know about it. [ She laughs lightly. ]

[ He'll nod. ] Most likely... I can't understand them either--perhaps it would be a different story if they were birds.

Do you think there's a universe there where horses rule the world?

I wouldn't be surprised. But it's hard to imagine how much things would need to change to accommodate hooves.

[ She looks up at the sky, absently trying to think about how it'd work. ] Hmm. Hard to picture...

[ This is a strange topic, but well, it certainly works for keeping his mind off of letters that he's not even sure can be sent. ] Maybe it'd make more sense with centaurs? Though how that'd come about is beyond me.

I guess they wouldn't really need.. chairs and stuff? But then everything'd have to be built up bigger.... I can't picture centaurs on construction sites trying to balance on tiny beams very well.

I'd think they'd try to compensate for that with machinery and the like. Or try to live with humans. Or both. That's what happened where I came from.

I suppose the... human part must come from somewhere.......

[ ...... ]

... Maybe we shouldn't think about this.

I second this notion.

[ Because yeah, this isn't a road he wants to go on. ]

...So what brings you here anyway, Miss Asahina?

Hmm. Just wandering about... It's the last week, so there's nothing to do but wait for the end to come.

It is close... I'm not sure what that end will entail, but I am writing a little more just in case. But who knows what I can do with it then.

Oh for my letter I'm just... going to say goodbye to Tenn.

I plan on trying to leave as soon as we can. [ preferably she doesn't want any long goodbyes. Nageki is the only one she'll admit her plans on this front though. ]

Same. But I have goodbye letters to write to those from home as well. Not sure if they can get it though, depending on what happens.

[ Closing his eyes here. ]

...I'm not the type to spend a long time on goodbyes in person anyway.

Yeah. I don't think we really need to tell each other our goodbyes properly, huh? Just that we wish each other more than we're probably going to do.

Yes, I definitely do. [ Here they go again. ] We'll end things on our own terms, no matter what is forced on us.

Definitely. Our decisions will be our own and not some monsters trying to force their will on us.

[ They can be the monsters instead, if they wish. ]
