GRAVEYARD PT. II

GRAVEYARD

The world is black. And then you blink at your plate.

A portion of your favorite dish greets your eyes, albeit in a form you may never have seen it in before. Encased in a thick, wobbling layer of multi-colored gelatin, the food you know and love now sits suspended in its protein-based enclosure as an eccentric re-imagining of the dish. Furthermore, it only takes a glance to see that the rest of the dining table's spread shares this same theme, as every single dish, sweet or savory, finds itself victim to a jiggling Jell-o jail.

Still, you won't have much time to take this all in before a quiet, high-pitched giggling makes its way to your ears, only crescendoing in volume the longer you sit in this oh-so-familiar dining room. It doesn't take much to find the source of the sound either; unlike the other side, this place is absolutely teeming with fairies to the point where the fluttering of their iridescent wings is clearly audible behind the din of their laughter. As you come to your senses, dozens and dozens of beady eyes watch with their tiny faces stretched out in a wide grin, before speaking in unison.

"Welcome, we can't wait to serve you!"

As the fairies erupt in raucous laughter all around you, at least one more thing is readily apparent: however you met your end, your body is completely whole again. You also have company at the table with you, although whether it's desirable company or not may depend on the circumstances surrounding your death.

In any case, there's nothing stopping anyone from leaving the dining room and roaming freely as usual, and most of the same areas that were available to you on the other side are still present here, albeit with some differences. And though your life may have been stolen from you, it still looks like you have a part in this tale, somehow, someway.

So, will you let your story finish here, or will you write your own ending?

[ two people can play at that game, jack. ]

I see. So I guess we really aren't that different. Or maybe you're on a whole different level? That mask of yours is pretty impressive, after all. It's scary~

[ c-ta wishes he could rip the skin of his face off. ]

So? What does the actor want to say now that he's off stage?

I've been called scary a few times, you see. But I'm just a humble musician at the end of the day. I could never compare to half the people here ~

[There's a deliberate lilt in Jack's voice; he's pitching it higher, in a lovely emulation of fear, letting it shiver, in a satisfying emulation of trembling. His voice is an instrument as well, isn't it?

But he smiles serenely all the same.]

Do you step off the stage, then, C-ta? Where is the stage? And who may be upon it? I wonder.

Oh, come on, don't be modest. A "humble musician" wouldn't have been able to do what they did to Suga.

[ there's a slight edge to his voice; thinly veiled anger. the hand on the dagger trembles slightly, and the hand on jack's hair tightens. ]

All of us here have stepped off the stage that your stupid little Don set up. We're the losers, you see-- you included. We're all backstage here, so you don't have to play any of your stupid roles.

Oh, are you still under the impression that it was all my work? I suppose I am flattered, in a strange way.

I could have done it alone, you see, but it would not have gone nearly as smoothly; and there was really no reason not to have a helping hand.

But you are in luck: I am the one on this side, so you may do what you like with me.

[He doesn't stiffen as C-ta loses composure. Relaxes instead, easy and very deliberate, like this is something he's done a thousand times. Watches him.]

And indeed, I have fulfilled my role now, so it hardly matters. All of this game was a gamble, and sometimes you simply lose a few pieces more.

I suppose this is how you spend your time backstage, then?

Oh I don't really care if it was either you or McGillis that had come here. Either one of you would have been good enough. Or did you ask that rat to get rid of Suga for you?

[ it pisses him off. everything about jack pisses him off. from his hair to his fancy suit. from his empty smiles to his saccharine words. everything about him pisses him off and it makes his blood boil.

he presses the blade against jack's throat. it's sharp enough to bring a small red line.

deep breaths. steady grip. ]

No, it isn't. But hey, you think you're above all of us, so why not give you a special greeting?

[ because this is the least that jack deserves. in c-ta's eyes, he sees a traitor. he sees the fox. he thinks of a-ya. he thinks of suga. he thinks of a-ya's corpse. he thinks of how suga's corpse must have looked like. a caved in skull. chest wounds. stab wounds with a box cutter. gripping his cell phone.

cw throat cutting

[personal profile] mearry 2021-07-11 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'll make sure you feel as much fucking pain as I did, you fucking bastard.

[ with a fluid motion that he has been practicing since a day and a half ago, c-ta make a slice through jack's throat. it's not exactly clean or deep enough to do a quick kill but enough to make the blood start flowing out. ]

cw: death by throat cutting?

[personal profile] heroicact 2021-07-11 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[And Jack keeps smiling, and smiling, and smiling, even as the bloodflow continues -- even as his eyes get glassier, staring straight at C-ta and past him -- even with dying gasps and coughs going on though he doesn't particularly try to talk given it's inconvenient, really, this is such an inconvenient way to die.

C-ta really should practice his wrist flicks.

It takes a little while, maybe some rather unsettling death throes, but Jack watches C-ta watching him die throughout.

Anyway, Jack Vessalius is dead. The sequel!]

[ death really isn't something that he can get used to.

in a way, that's a good thing. it reminds c-ta that a life is important, even in a place where death is cheap and they can come back at any time.

but as he watches jack bleed to death...it's simply too much for him. even before he dies, c-ta runs out of the room, his heart hammering against his chest with an intense guilt and anxiety that threatens to overwhelm him.

he barely makes it out of the doors before he has to slide down against the wall and bring his knees against his chest, covering his head to cry. ]
